Getting around
A Day in Sandton Without a Car
You can spend a full working day in Sandton without driving. A practical, car-free itinerary built around the Gautrain, walking and the precinct's density.
Here is a claim that sounds unlikely in a car-dependent country and is nonetheless true: you can spend a full, productive working day in Sandton without once getting behind the wheel. The precinct is one of the only places in South Africa where that holds, and it is worth walking through to see how.
Getting in
The day starts on the Gautrain. If you live or stay near a station on the line, from Pretoria, Rosebank, Midrand or along the airport spur, you ride it straight into Sandton station in the heart of the business core. No M1, no parkade, no fuel. You surface in the middle of the precinct rather than on its edge, which is the whole trick.
The working hours
From the station, the rest of the day is on foot. A co-working desk or an office in Sandton Central is a short walk away. Lunch is a short walk the other way, among the restaurants around Nelson Mandela Square or the quieter weekday counters under the towers. A meeting in another building is a walk, not a drive. The density that makes Sandton feel crowded by car is exactly what makes it easy on foot.
Between tasks there is somewhere to step out to. The landscaped squares and green pockets of the precinct are built for a mid-afternoon break off the screen, and you reach them the same way you reach everything else here, by walking.
Getting out
At the end of the day you walk back to the station and ride home, skipping the evening crawl on the highway entirely. The commute that is usually the worst part of working in Sandton becomes the easy part.
The honest limits
Car-free Sandton has edges, and pretending otherwise helps no one. The Gautrain only helps if both ends of your trip are near stations. The precinct beyond the dense core spreads out and assumes a car. And some errands simply need one.
But for a day spent inside Sandton Central, the car is optional, and that is rare enough in this country to be one of the strongest practical arguments for working from the precinct. Drive or train to the core, then let the density do the rest.
Common questions
Can you work in Sandton without a car?
Yes, if your trip starts near a Gautrain station. The train drops you in the heart of Sandton Central, and the main offices, co-working spaces, shops and restaurants are within walking distance of the station.
What are the limits of going car-free in Sandton?
The Gautrain only helps if both ends of your journey are near stations, and the wider precinct beyond the dense core is spread out and car-oriented. Car-free works best when your day stays inside Sandton Central.
